Mrs. Koenig's Art Class

My art classes are choice-based classes. Choice-based classrooms allow students to direct their own artistic discoveries. Student choose what artworks they create and how they create them. This helps foster critical thinking skills that are necessary as a 21st century skill.

The TAB/Choice Curriculum has three tenets:

1. What do artists do?

2. The student is the artist.

3, The art room is the student's studio.

My classroom is set up as a creative studio space to allow students to focus on their own interests. Materials are easily accessible and students are responsible for their care, proper use and clean up. I give demonstrations on different materials at the beginning of the quarter, as well as throughout the 9 weeks. I have many digital and analog (remember books?) sources that students can reference for ideas and inspiration.

The Studio Habits were outlined by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a link to the project is here.

2-D Design classes will focus on applying the themes to their work. The themes will be student generated and explore aspects of contemporary life. We will also explore contemporary artists and how they use the materials we learn in our boot camps.
